World Maritime Day 2018
Today is World Maritime Day and while it is not widely celebrated outside our industry perhaps it should be. This year the organisers of the day the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), a body of the United Nations, is celebrating its 70th year of existence.
As the IMO celebrate their 70th birthday, Australia is celebrating its existence as an island nation and therefore a maritime nation. Over 200 years of maritime activity has led to where we are today.
For generations Australian seafarers have been critical to the growth of Australia, risking their lives for the benefits we as Australians currently enjoy.
As a maritime nation, this day gives us an opportunity to celebrate and reflect on the contribution of those who have dug the well from which we now drink. But also to acknowledge those who work alongside them at shore providing the economic foundation that modern Australia stands.
